#3: Repo! The Genetic Opera

January 13, 2011

So what’s it about?: In a future world where organ replacement is the next big fad, chaos ensues around the company who produces the organs, the man hired to reposess the organs, and one whiny, useless girl who was thrown into the mix.

The Good: Um… making it gothic was kind of cool.  And casting Paris Hilton as an heiress addicted to surgery was, um, inspired?  And there was a really cool prologue done entirely with comic book frames.

The Bad: This is the biggest mess of a musical I’ve ever seen in my life.  The plot was all over the place.  The music sounded like it was composed by kindergartners trying to play heavy metal songs on pots and pans (scratch that, that probably would have been an improvement).  And note to casting directors, if you are going to cast a musical, it helps if the cast can sing, but at the very least they need to be able to act!  Unfortunately this cast could do neither.

The Verdict: Okay, sure, if you really like gothic, cult films and music with no melody whatsoever, watch this film.  Otherwise, go listen to an elementary school orchestra, because even that would be less painful on the ears than this god awful film.

#76: Youth In Revolt

March 8, 2010

So what’s it about?: In an effort to win the girl of his dreams, a boy creates his rebellious altar ego and ends up ensuing some crazy chaos.

The Good: Michael Cera as Nick Twisp?  Same old adorkable Michael Cera.  Michael Cera as Francois Dillinger?  HILARIOUS!  Seriously, this movie needed more Francois.  And Portia Doubleday got to wear the cutest dresses ever!

The Bad: Sadly Francois was the only good part about this movie, and like I said, there wasn’t enough of him.  The rest of the movie was a big meh.  In the end, I didn’t really care if Nick got the girl, because frankly I just didn’t care about the movie.  Ah well.

The Verdict: Don’t even bother.  But, hey, it’s nice to know Michael Cera can do something other than play himself.

And so it begins…

What defines a movie buff?  The always reliable Urban Dictionary defines it (oh so eloquently, I might add) as “when someone is addicted to movies and actively goes to the cinema on a regular basis.”  Agreed!  However, it seems today that people reserve the term “movie buff” to those who see only the films they deem worth watching, aka well rated blockbusters, award contenders and art films.  But shouldn’t a movie buff also see the Love Guru’s and Catwoman’s as well?  I mean, a true movie buff should be able to not only rave about how great a movie like Requiem for a Dream is but also how god awful Gigli is, without just relying on what the media tells them.  So… the only way to truly become a movie buff is to see EVERYTHING.  And since that is pretty much impossible unless you can somehow watch 1,000 movies a day, well, you just need to watch as many movies as possible.

So, in an effort to become a true movie buff, I am on a mission to watch 500 movies in 1 year.  Why 500?  Because everyone and their mom can watch a movie a day, but I still have a life, so 2 movies everyday is kind of pushing it.  The 500 films will be in theatres, on DVD, made-for-TV movies, streaming on, whatever.  As long as it’s a full length feature it’s game (no offense shorts!)

Let the mission begin!

DISCLAIMER: All films watched in this project will be watched legally.  I love the film industry and in no way condone piracy or sneaking into movies.  If I see more than one film in theaters a day it’s because I got tickets to each movie.  Thank you.
