#62: Sherlock Holmes

December 20, 2009

I managed to make it to a special screening of this film, and now that I’m writing this, I fell grateful that I was able to see this before seeing Avatar.

So what’s it about?: Everyone’s favorite detective is out to save England from some pretty nasty chaos ensuing.

The Good: This film is awesome, plain and simple.  Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are freaking perfect as Holmes and Watson.  The plot is exciting and well thought out as any Sherlock Holmes story should be.  The cinematography is great by blockbuster standards and I adored the score.  And like every good action movie, or any great movie period, it has perfect moments of humor stuck in.  Great update on a classic character and a perfect Christmas Day blockbuster.

The Bad: Sadly, this was not a good year for Rachel McAdams who I feel was perfectly cast as Irene Adler and yet managed to mess it up and become the weakest link in otherwise great cast.  And, well, sadly this film is coming out to the public a week after Avatar, which visually is going to make Sherlock Holmes otherwise great effects look like something from the 90s.

The Verdict: Story wise, it’s the blockbuster of the holiday.  Definitely worth seeing.
