#55: The Men Who Stare At Goats

December 15, 2009

So what’s it about?: A journalist trying to get into Iraq runs into a “Jedi” and learns of a secret psychic branch of the military that ensues chaos telepathically.

The Good: This movie has a killer cast.  When you have George Clooney and Jeff Bridges, who will both be nominated for Best Actor this year for other movies, along with Ewan McGregor and Kevin Spacey (and a cameo by Hunter Bell for all you [tos]sers out there) you know that acting has got to be good.  And acting saved this film from being unwatchable.

The Bad: The story was a mess.  I’m surprised anybody 1) wrote this script and 2) read this script and decided it’d be good to make into a movie.  It has some moments here and there, but overall it just had no direction whatsoever.  Ah well, another classic example of wasting a good cast.

The Verdict: Go see Up in the Air and Crazy Heart and mourn the fact that Ewan McGregor can no longer get parts in films worth seeing, but don’t bother seeing this movie.
