#39: The Shining

November 1, 2009

theshiningOkay, so today is Halloween, and I decided to be lame and watch a Halloween movie marathon.  First up, while it was still daylight, the scariest movie I’ve ever seen (though that could be because the first and last time I saw it I was 6).  No seriously, to this day going in to bathrooms still scares me thanks to this film.

So what’s it about?: A failing writer, his wife, and his “gifted” son take care of a Colorado hotel during the winter months.  Creepy, creepy chaos ensues.

The Good: OMG, this film still creeps me out.  I mean, seriously, the blood and gore fests of today need to take a huge step back and look at films like this that are genuinely creepy.  The soundtrack, the camera angles, the coloring, the directing make even the most innocent of scenes intense.  And, what do you know, there’s actually a story underneath it all.  And as an added bonus, the actors actually look like a real family, not like some picture perfect catalog cutout family.

The Bad: What is bad about this film?  Other than the fact that it scares the crap out of you!

The Verdict: If you are not nervous about getting scared, then you HAVE to see this film.  It’s a CLASSIC.

P.S. As an added bonus, the book is pretty damn good too.
